So what better way to spend a weekend then getting together with some friends and their cars and racing each other at the dragstrip? Musclecars, late model hotrods, trucks, motorcycles, imports and even street rods, any vehicle can run and have a chance at winning. Bracket racing is more about how consistent you are driving your car versus how fast it accelerates in the quarter mile. At our December meet, Mike D'Amato's 1928 V-6 powered Chevy coupe made it to the semi finals and Mike hadn't raced in 40 years! You don't have to work at Palo Verde to race with us, you just have to enjoy racing!
So how will this work?
Most street cars won't require any additional safety gear. If you will be running 14.0 seconds or more, you don't even need a helmet and can take a passenger.
You'll need seat belts, good tires, all of your lug nuts and a radiator overflow. Standard fare for most cars.
If you have something with a little extra horsepower that will get you into the 13's or quicker, you'll need a Snell 2000 (or better) helmet. Metro Motorsports at 59th Ave. & Bell has some reasonable prices on helmets. 12.99 and quicker requires a driveshaft loop, slicks or street tires. If you're running slicks you'll need the open ended lug nuts so the tech inspector can verify proper thread engagement. and there may be a few other requirements if you're running something other than street tires. If you have any questions about what you'd need, feel free to ask for information!
The track will open at 7 PM. Racing will start about 8 PM. Speedworld is off of Grand Ave., 9 miles north of Bell Rd. Turn left on Happy Valley Rd. Click here for more track information. Speedworld Dragstrip
When you arrive at the track, you'll have to pay your entry fee. Make sure you tell them you're going to race with Palo Verde Hot Rods. You will be given a tech card to fill out prior to tech inspection. The card will indicate your with PVHR and you will be told what staging lanes to report to when time trials begin. Speedworld will assign our group 1 or 2 staging lanes, depending on our car count. When you drive through the pits you will see our group off to the left. Look for the PVHR banner. We typically set up about mid track so we can all pit together.

Everyone will run through a basic safety inspection and then we run time trials until about 10 o'clock depending on our car count.. This allows the drivers to see what their car while run in the quarter mile. At our inaugural race, about half of our participants had never made a run down a sanctioned 1/4 mile racetrack before that day. You'll have a lot of friends around to help you through the staging and launching procedures if you're new to the dragstrip. So if you'd like to come out an give it a shot, don't let inexperience keep you from coming out and having some fun.
Then after a short break, we'll make sure everyone that wants to continue running in bracket eliminations is signed up and kicked in their eliminations entry fee of $20. If you want to continue just making time only runs, you can get into the "Time Only" lanes which won't cost you the additional $20. But come on, bracket racing is about how consistent the driver is, not who has the fastest car. Going one on one with a friend in actual eliminations is just that much more fun!
If we get enough participants in the eliminations portion of the day, we'll see if we can pay down to the semi-finals this time. If you make it to that spot, you'd at least get your entry fee back.
As the race gets closer, we will post more info on the Just Another Toy Message Board There is a navigation button at the bottom of the page. You can register on the Message Board for free if you want to post questions.
