Donnie Henson is
the proud owner of this 1996 25' Eliminator Daytona. This is the second second Daytona
model
that Donnie has owned,
this one, replaced a 22' model that had this basic engine between the stringers.
When he found this 25 it was equipped with a 502 Magnum and a Bravo 1
drive. Oddly enough, for some reason the original person who rigged the
Daytona mounted the outdrives X-dimension about four inches below what is
normally used. Most 25 Daytona's have the top of the outdrive flush with the rub
rail. This appears to be the best position for top speed. Donnie took the 502 Mag and put it in the 22
Daytona, which was then sold.
Since running with your buds seems to always be a top speed contest on the lake,
he decided "a little more power" was in order! The boat was hooked up and taken to Larry's
Speed & Marine in Tucson. The engine was freshened up and a set of Brodix
aluminum heads were added. To get a little bit more air into the combustion chambers, a
Blower Shop 8-71 supercharger replaced the B&M 250 that had been on the motor.
Air and fuel is now metered through a set of Holley's 950 HP carburetors. The motor was
dialed in on the dyno. Horsepower peaked at 890! So, we're pushing 890
horsepower through a Bravo 1 drive designed for 500 horsepower max. The
result, as you expected, a busted drive after a particularly hard run
in Havasu. The boat was taken to Bergeron Engineering in Mesa, AZ where a
new Bravo XZ upper was mated to the IMCO shortie lower. The shortie helped
reduce the 4" excessive X-dimension to only 2 " now. Spinning a 30
pitch Bravo 4-blade, Donnie saw 108.9 mph on the GPS at a recent outing in Lake Havasu. The motor was spinning beyond the 6000 rpm the tach was capable of
monitoring. So a new prop with a little more pitch will be acquired to get the
Daytona a few more mph. Some thought has been given to adding a stand-off box to
make up that last two inches. Time and outings with his boating buds will tell!

Here's an old shot of Donnie's 22 Daytona I came across.
