THANKSGIVING  WEEKEND 2003

Thanksgiving weekend, 2003, once again we found our two aspiring road racers at Firebird Raceway for a Pro Autosports weekend of racing on the Firebird main track. This time though the pits were set up on the opposite side of the track which provided much better viewing for the spectators, not to mention better pictures!

Bill and Donnie wind through the turns during morning warm up.

Bill heads up the entrance of the dragstrip  staging lanes, which leads to a 1/2 mile straight, flat out!

Rabbit helps strap Bill in for qualifying. Bill ended up taking the pole position with Donnie right behind him.

5 of the 6 Bondostangs qualified, line up prior to the start.

The boys bring them around for the final line up before hitting the straight and the drop of the flag.

Away they go!

Donnie coming around in the lead!

The number 9 car started at the back and was slowly picking the cars off as he moved up in the pack. He would be right on Bill's butt until they'd get to the straight. Bill's car had a little more power and could stretch it out enough to keep him at bay.

This was a tight race even after about 15 minutes of racing!

Here's a quick series I caught. Donnie's right rear tire has started going away and made his hard driving style susceptible to this type of outcome! They did realize when all was said and done that they made a mistake rotating the tires after qualifying. Instead of putting the right front tire on the left back, it went to the right back where it still saw some serious abuse!

Bill was able to hold off the hard charging #9 to take the win!

This is Donnie's right rear tire, it's headed for the scrap bin!

The two proud drivers after the race. Donnie (l) and Bill (r). Donnie was bummed about spinning pout and a DNF, but there's always another race. He's going to try and run the whole series in 2004 and take the championship!

Here's a few more of the interesting rides that were at the race this weekend.

This guys 2003 Mustang was set up to run the Silver State Classic in Nevada. Armed with 440 cubic inches of Windsor power, he claimed he was running in the 150-160 mph class. He had to stay in this class for two races before he would be allowed to run the Unlimited class. This thing had a full race front and rear suspension to back up the power.

This truck was making some serious power. He was on the brakes hard every time he'd hit the staging lane entrance!
