August 2004
Tonna and I went to San Diego to attend the wedding of friends, Russ and Stephanie. We stayed at the San Diego Marriott. We had a room on the 23rd floor over looking the bay. During the day, before the wedding we joined Craig and Melissa Smith's (Tonna's boss) on their 46 foot Sea Ray, which is moored at the Marriott Marina.
We drove over to San Diego. As soon as we crossed into
California on Interstate 8, we were in the middle of a terrible sand storm! We
puttered along for 20 minutes before the storm let up. Of course after the sand
came the rain, which made a nice mess of the truck

This is our hotel, right on the bay. Nice room with a balcony that looked right out on the marina and bay.
Here's a view from our room. We could see Tonna's boss's boat, it's the one at the bottom of the center picture. White with the tan window covers. The most impressive thing was watching him get the boat out and into that slip. Twin motors and a bow thruster plus a lot of experience made it look easy. He'd spin that thing right in without ever bumping the dock!
A 12 foot beam allows for quite a nice interior! Leather seats, two staterooms and more than enough headroom to stand up in the cabin!
I've never driven a boat this big
the Sundancer is
powered by twin 480 horsepower turbo diesels. The dash was an amazing collection
of electronics. From radar to GPS to auto pilot. It wasn't the fastest thing
ever, but at 50,000 lbs plus, we crushed the waves and could actually talk while
under way!
Cruising back into the marina to our hotel (center of left picture) Couple of skyline pictures. Interesting fact about this harbor is that powerboats actually have the right of way over the sailboats. This is due to the many slow maneuvering freighters that come in and out of the area.
Tonna and Melissa relaxing.
The aircraft carrier Midway is now docked at Seaport Village next to the Marriott. I wish we would have had time to take the tour! Have to go back, there's a lot to do and see here!
One of the newest aircraft carrier in the US fleet is the Ronald Regan. It's moored in the bay. Most of the boats were either sailboats or cruisers. The right picture shows one of the few "performance" boats I saw was at the marina. An older model Scarab that supposedly had a pair of big Sterling's under the hatch! "Somewhat ratty, but very fast" was how Craig Smith referred to the boat.
