TWIN TURBO TO GO!

I ran across this Mustang in the pit's at Firebird Raceway at a recent Pro Autosports road racing event. At first glance it might not stand out as anything out of the norm. But, a little closer investigation reveals a rollbar inside the car along with a large assortment of gauges to monitor engine vitals. The brakes are also another obvious upgrade.  Pop the hood and we're out in high tech hot rod world now. A big aftermarket intake is the first thing that caught my eye. I glance at the fenderwell fully expecting a Paxton or Vortech supercharger. Not there. A look at the exhaust manifold shows something is bolted on the manifold besides a head pipe, a turbocharger. There's one over on the other side of the bent eight as well.

The owner said he was just getting a lot of the bugs worked out, mostly ignition gremlins. I asked him if he had ever had the car out to the dragstrip? He said he had, but the car wasn't really set up for the straight line. Traction was an obvious negative. The car was posting some woeful 2.0+ second 60' times, but registering 12 second times at 120+ mph at the finish line!

While making a early morning warm up session on track, there was an odd "clunk". The car started acting a bit twitchy. Finally things started to get too loose and he slowed to a crawl back to the pits. A look at the front end showed the problem, a helm joint that hold part of the control arm in place had snapped clean off. This allowed the front tire to jam back against the back of the wheel well. Luckily this didn't happen at 120 mph! Check out the picture and notice how the wheel is located!
